Groovy Green Livin EVOL

EVOL is love backwards. Did you see that right away when you looked at the logo? I have to admit that I didn’t. I’ve walked by the EVOL display hundreds of times in the frozen section at our local Whole Foods, but it never dawned on me that EVOL was love backwards. I needed my 12, 11 and 9 year old to tell me. Not cool.

Groovy Green Livin EVOL

I love to cook, my husband loves to cook and our kids cook, but cooking doesn’t always happen. This time of year we generally find ourselves sitting on a field most nights watching soccer or baseball with a little karate thrown into the mix. Somehow we manage to pull together an edible meal most nights, but there are those occasional evenings when it’s just not going to happen. On those rare days I like to have quick meal options available. Not fast food, but something that I don’t have to put much thought into.

Enter EVOL. EVOL isn’t your average frozen food. Their frozen meal options hit high on the “healthier food” scale.

  • NOTHING ARTIFICIAL. EVOL’s products have no artificial flavors, colors, additives, preservatives or fillers.
  • ALL NATURAL PROTEINS. EVOL’s Chicken, beef, pork, eggs and cheese come from animals on US Family Farms that are fed a 100% vegetarian diet and raised without the use of Antibiotics or Hormones.
  • HORMONE-FREE CHEESE. EVOL’s cheese is rBGH, rBST and rennet free.
  • NON-GMO GRAINS, VEGETABLES & OILS. EVOL’s grains, vegetables and oils are GMOFree.

Where is EVOL sold?

EVOL can be found in over 7,000 retailers nationwide such as Whole Foods Markets, Stop N Shop, Costco, Safeway, Kroger, Target and Publix.

The back story

You can find the full story on their site, but in a nutshell three talented guys came together to make this company happen. If you’re a Survivor fan you might recognize one of the company’s founders.

What we thought

I’m not a meat eater (unless it’s really expensive turkey -organic and raised without antibiotics) or cheese eater so I wasn’t able to try most of the samples sent over. That didn’t stop my kids from digging in and they gave everything a thumbs up.

My oldest really loved the gluten-free Chicken Enchilada Bowl and my youngest loved all of the burritos.

Groovy Green Livin EVOL Chicken Enchilada Bake

The best part on my end was recognizing every ingredient listed and knowing that most of them were products generally stocked in my fridge. EVOL’s products have no artificial flavors, colors, additives, preservatives or fillers. Nothing but real food.

We did notice that the Chicken Enchilada Bake didn’t look quite like the photo on the front of the box, but that didn’t stop them from eating every last drop.

Other thoughts:

  • The sodium count was pretty high on some of the products-the Chicken Enchilada Bake came in at 630 mg.
  • The bowls are compostable and made from a chemical-free process that uses very little water.
  • The box that some of the products come in is made from recycled paper board.

Bottom Line: EVOL’s products were top of the line when it comes to gluten-free frozen foods. The company is the complete package: solid ingredients including many organic and natural, great sustainable intentions, and great taste according to my kids. I would not recommend eating their products daily since they are no substitute for a fresh, home cooked meal. In a pinch they do the job and they do it well.

If you want to see who’s behind this fast-growing company check out their EVOL Team page. Very cute. Very clever.

Disclosure: I was sent a package of gluten-free EVOL products for review. The opinions in this review are my very own.

  2. I purchased three different ones to try. The mac and cheese with truffle and parmesan.Delicious!, the chipotle chicken whatever it was , my son asked where was the chicken and it just had the essence of the flavors, until he added a little salt. He ended up liking it, and lastly the steak with teh black beans etc. We haven’t tried it yet. But hoping it will be good!

  3. Never tried these. I usually stay away from frozen meals, but will buy frozen vegetables to add to home-cooked meals.

  4. I just tried the Truffle Parmesan Mac & Cheese. I loved it! When I first bought it I was a little skeptical because of the price. Normal tv dinners in our house cost around 1-2 dollars roughly. This one was around 4 dollars I think. Totally worth it! I feel full but not bloated, completely satisfied. My only concern is the sodium amount. 680mg, yikes! I will be picking up a few different ones to try, hopefully with less sodium lol. Overall I highly recommend! 🙂

  5. my son and I have been eating Evole since it showed up in Target stores. We both LOVE -EVOL Everything they make is delicious!!!

  6. So I found this by total mistake, I wanted something to substitute lean cuisines only because they do not taste all that great. I tried almost all the evol cups and they are all amazing , from the breakfast ones to the vegetarian cups are amazing!!!!!!

  7. Avoid the butternut squash ravoili. The ravoilis are ok by itself but their sage butter sauce is really, really bad.

  8. You should rename your big steak spicy burrito to big tuff old meat, unable to chew steak burrito. This was the worst burrito I have ever had in my life and I am 69 years old. If I see a review that says this burrito was good in any way then I know you must have paid them to say that.I will buy this again.

  9. What a disappointment for the purchase of Chicken Tikka Masala. Hardly any sauce and mostly rice. Nothing like the sale’s picture. Shall be telling Whole Foods

  10. Sorry you had a bad experience. I haven’t tried the Chicken Tikka Masala myself so I have no comparison. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  11. So disappointed in the evol Truffle Parmesan & Portabella Risitto. The pic in the bag showed lots of fluffy risotto. Unfortunately there was absolutely no Risitto in the dish. None. ☹️

  12. I added extra kale to the butternut squash ravioli …..SOO YUMMY!!!! Looking forward to trying other Evol meals!!

  13. Have to disagree with sh, The butternut squash ravs are one of my favorites!

  14. Agreed! The ravioli is delish

  15. I just finished the Fire Grilled Steak, delicious! Love the fact that it has only 1g of sugar to keep insulin in check, and with 20g of protein that will keep the fire going! Awesome product, will buy more.

  16. I have had a few of their products. I just had the Gluten free smoked gouda mac & cheese and ziti with meat sauce loved them both. I also love the potato, jalapeno breakfast burrito, but i will say the calories are very high on a lot of these items. Probably why I love them so much! I see there are Lean & Fit options, those are next to try.

  17. Chicken enchiladas way to salty, but yummy. My blood pressure will suffer tonight. How about a no salt meal. I have a salt shaker!
