My Search for a Safe Waffle Maker Groovy Green Livin

My kids love pancakes and waffles. We’ve decided that almost everything tastes better with maple syrup. Most weekends we’ll have some variation of pancakes to start off the day. We add fruit, flax seeds, chia seeds and occasionally chocolate chips for a special treat.

For the past few years my kids have been begging for a waffle maker. Just for the sheer ease of making breakfast, I would love one too. I’ve been looking, but have had no luck finding a safe, non-toxic waffle maker.

Most waffle makers contain a Teflon (PTFE and PFOA), non-stick coating. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), toxic fumes from the Teflon chemical released from pots and pans at high temperatures may kill pet birds and cause people to develop flu-like symptoms. Not something I want on my waffles!

So what’s a waffle lover to do?

After searching for many, many months (maybe years?), I’ve come up with a list of safer waffle makers (affiliate links*)

Rome’s Old Fashioned Waffle Iron ($19.99)

We’re going old school here. This waffle maker sits on top of your stove top and makes traditional waffles. There’s nothing fancy about it, but it works. This waffle iron is cast iron so remember it needs to be seasoned to work properly.

If you’re not interested in cast iron for your waffles the next step up would be a waffle maker with a ceramic (PTFE and PFOA free) coating.

KitchenAid Waffle Baker with CeramaShield Nonstick Coating  ($399)

This waffle maker has a CeramaShield coating. I contacted the company to find out what exactly that meant. I was told that the coating was PTFE and PFOA free. Unfortunately this model comes with a hefty price tag.

Oster DuraCeramic Belgian Waffle Maker ($19)

This Oster Belgian Waffle maker is designed with a DuraCeramic non-stick coating. After speaking with the company they assured me that the coating is free of aluminum, nickel, cadmium, and Teflon (PFOA and PTFE free). The price is right on this model.

Pancakes too!

If you’re looking for a safe pancake griddle this one is the best! I use my Lodge cast iron griddle all the time.

Do you have a safe waffle maker that you love?

  2. Yes!!! thank you! I have been looking for the perfect pancake cast iron pan that works on electric stove top… the Lodge says it does! Just ordered 🙂

  3. I have a cast iron waffle pan also Liane. I haven’t used it yet. Let me know what you think!

  4. Thanks! I am gonna buy the Oster one.. it’s in my price range and it’s not toxic. Been looking for a non toxic one for a year!

  5. I looked for a long time too Jon. Let me know how you like the Oster waffle maker once it arrives. Enjoy!

  6. I have silicone waffle moulds!

  7. I looked up duraceramic and this is what I found:
DuraCeramic is made with a limestone composite base and fortified with a polymeric resin. I am concerned that is not safe. I have a cast Iron stove top which I love the idea of and it works but it only makes a small waffle. I was hoping for one that made more at one time. 🙁 Also want belgium style. Any updates on this search would be great.

  8. Did you find a cast iron waffle maker made in the USA? My family does not buy foreign made products if it can be prevented. I love Lodge but they do not make a waffler maker and we love waffles. Thank you!

  9. Hi Amie, Unfortunately, I didn’t focus on products made in the USA. I’m also a Lodge fan. Maybe we should let them know that we’re interested in a waffle maker!

  10. Belgian waffles iron cast are available in Belgium. Lots of manufacturers, one French (Kampouz) , German (Neumarker) … http://www.vandhcorporation.com/Local-distributors_ep_41.html

  11. Ampi is a Belgium brand of waffle irons … expensive. I’m dreaming of this one.

  12. Thank you so much for posting this!!! I too was on the hunt for a safe waffle maker for ages- and finally ordered a cast iron one. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out well. It’s design is a bit tricky to navigate anyways, but then add in that I’m trying to make autoimmune paleo waffles using plantains and it has just been disastrous! So it has ended up rusted and in sitting in a cupboard, unused. I am so glad I found your page. I’m going to clean up the cast iron one, donate it, and order the Oster one!

  13. Great Krista! Let me know what you think.

  14. Im sorry but the way the oyster etc ceramic coating is bonded, it then can leach toxins. They are right thst there coating is safe but the bonding makes it apparently unsafe.
