Fitness Routine Disrupted

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you probably know that exercise is a big part of my life.  It really kicked in when I started law school many moons ago. During a school vacation week I traveled with my family to Israel. My brothers and sister were always (and still are) in fabulous shape. We decided to climb Masada-an historical mountain in Israel. Off went my sister and brothers and I fell behind, needing to stop periodically to rest. After a few comments in semi-jest from my family, I knew that the time had come to get in shape.

I joined a gym in Boston and made exercise a part of my daily routine. I did my first road race with my husband and a few close friends to celebrate my thirtieth birthday. I don’t always have a goal in mind when it comes to fitness, and I don’t always need one, but I continue to incorporate it into my life.  I mix it up with a little yoga, running, cycling and going to the gym.  I  ramped it up a few years ago and trained for my first sprint triathlon in honor of a little boy in our town who lost his life to cancer. It’s been four years and the triathlon has become an annual event.

When summer comes my consistent, daily work-out isn’t as consistent and it makes me crazy. I’ve tried over the years to find ways to work fitness in and been relatively successful, but there’s room for improvement.

Metabolism Changes

The amount I exercise had been pretty consistent over the years and my eating habits are in relatively good shape, with an occasional splurge or indulgence. My weight really doesn’t fluctuate that much and hasn’t in many years. BUT I’m starting to notice that my metabolism has changed and I  do need to pay closer attention to what goes in-the quantity of food I’m eating- or it could end up landing in the wrong spot.  So I need some motivation to stay where I am.

Go Green Get Fit Challenge

Groovy Green Livin Go Green, Get Fit

This summer I’m joining a group of 25+ remarkable green bloggers in the Eco Mom Alliance’s Go Green Get Fit Challenge presented by Healthy Home Magazine.  We are joining forces and on June 18, 2012 we will launch our 12 week health and wellness series where we will all share our ups and downs throughout the challenge. We will be working together to offer information, inspiration, and motivation for each other and-you guessed it-I’m hoping that you’ll join me too.

My Fitness Goals

  1. Pick up my pace in the swim portion of the triathlon. I also panic just before the start ‘gun’ goes off. Anyone want to train me? I’ve been swimming all of my life and feel pretty comfortable in the water. But I’m not fast.
  2. Cycle as fast as my husband. My legs aren’t as long, but I think I can do it. Especially since he doesn’t think I can.
  3. Find a consistent time to exercise over the summer or be accepting of the amount of time I find to keep in shape.

Will you join me? Pretty please.

What are your fitness goals this summer?

  1. Happy to be on this challenge with you!! I must say I admire your little triathlon self. I am lucky I can find time to workout with my little DVD’s. 🙂

  2. OK, I now Like Go Green, Get Fit on Facebook.

I know that I need to exercise but actually doing it is a different story, I really have no excuse.

One of my goals is to get back into yoga. I love how it makes me feel but I have not made time for it in a VERY long time.

Are there any bets riding on your 2nd goal? I think you can do it too!

  3. Love goal #2! I think a little healthy competition can be a good thing. I am looking forward to this challenge and seeing everyone rise up to meet all of their goals!

  4. Love your fitness goals, especially because I’m the least competitive person you’ll ever meet. I really admire people who like to best the best even though I’m perfectly happy to be wherever I am 🙂 Good luck with this!

  5. Ditto the others on goal #2! I smiled when I read that one and I’ll be watching for the post that says, “Get used to it, Hubs.” 🙂

  6. Hi Gretchen, We’ll see! I have a lot of work to do-he’s pretty fast!

  7. Hi Brenna, It’s so nice to have so many familiar and friendly faces doing the Go Green Get Fit challenge together. Good luck to you too!

  8. Hi Lynn, I’m so glad we’ll be doing this together. You’ve done such a fantastic job so far-I’m excited to see where we all end up!

  9. Oh good Marsha-glad you joined on Facebook. I think one of the biggest challenges is dedicating time to exercise. When you have kids and a family there are so many things pulling you in different directions. Trying to find a space dedicated all to yourself is complicated. I would suggest starting with a small amount of time and gradually building. Another option is to involve your family-go for bike rides, play tennis-the options are endless. Yoga is perfect. Good luck!

  10. Hi Shane! I’m so happy to be doing this challenge with you. Whatever you’re doing, it’s working!

  14. Oh I’d totally LOVE to do a triathlon if it weren’t for the whole swimming and cycling parts. Hehehe – And I think you can definitely beat your husband!

  15. Thanks for the inspiration, Lori! It’s so great when women encourage each other for fitness and health sake. I’m literally running to keep up with my kids these days, and it’s the best thing I could do for myself.

  16. Hi Anne, I know running around with your kids it most certainly a workout! It took me many years to get back into a fitness routine that worked. It does help to have community that provides support and motivation.

  17. Hey Cathy-you can do a tri as a relay team. You could be the runner in your group and I KNOW you can run! So don’t laugh it off, there’s still time to join in!!
