Groovy Green Livin SunRocket solar thermos and kettle

A SunRocket Solar Kettle-sounds pretty glamorous and mysterious doesn’t it? When Sun Cooking asked me to review one of their top selling solar products I was intrigued. The SunRocket uses solar energy to heat and boil water. I mean talk about an incredibly green concept-using the sun to heat food and water. No need for gas, electricity, propane or wood. Solar cooking and heating emits zero CO2 or other greenhouse gasses. Now that’s a sustainable way to cook.

About Sun Cooking

Sun Cooking is Australia’s largest source of solar cookers and accessories. Now they are making their way into the US. Sun Cooking US is a new online community for the solar cooking enthusiast. The company was started by Aussie mum, Heather Stevens, and appreciated by her son Tasman (who gets to eat lots of yummy food out of the oven!). Heather and her well fed family spent 10 months living aboard their catamaran sailing Australia, and used their solar ovens daily. How cool is that??

The SunRocket

When this solar kettle and thermos comes out of the box it really looks like a rocket ready to launch. At first glance I was curious as to how this little device could actually heat water. I was amazed at how simple it was to use. The SunRocket comes with very easy to follow instructions. After reading through them once I was ready to go.

I unscrewed the lid and washed out the SunRocket, as the instructions suggested, with warm soapy water. The interior of the SunRocket is a glass tube which means no BPA issues.

After the glass tube was rinsed out I filled it with our drinking water, leaving about 2 inches of space from the top of the tube. The lid was screwed back on and we were ready for action. The funky looking panels to catch the sunlight were opened wide and the handle rotated over the top to hold the panels in place.

One thing to keep in mind when using anything solar powered is that you really are dependent upon the sun. Here in New England I had to wait a day or so for some sunshine before I could give the SunRocket a try. I took the rocket out onto my porch and set it up with the shadow directly behind the device. I left it outside for about one hour and came back to test the temperature of the water. It was actually hot enough for my tea. I have to admit I was shocked. It really worked.

Once the water was heated I closed the reflective panels and my water stayed warm for two cups of tea.

According to the folks at Sun Cooking you can also cook simple foods in the SunRocket  like eggs. You do, however, need to be careful not to block the valves.

The SunRocket can be used to cook simple foods and even melt snow. Watch this video and see what it can do!

The SunRocket is a fantastic gift

Do you camp, fish or hike? This is a perfect gift for anyone who likes to spend time outdoors. It’s light and compact enough to add to your camping and hiking equipment without being too cumbersome.
