Disney is Pushing Me Outside of My Comfort Zone

Groovy Green Livin Disney [1]

As most of you know I’ve been working really hard to get Disney to change their ways.

Back in August the Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ) [3] published a national report, Hidden Hazards: Toxic Chemicals Inside Children’s Back to School Supplies, which found that seventy-five percent of children’s “back-to-school” supplies tested in a laboratory had elevated levels of toxic phthalates.  A number of the school supplies containing high levels of these chemicals were Disney and Spiderman branded school supplies.

I decided to take matters into my own hands so I started a petition on Change.org [4] calling on Disney to get phthalates and vinyl out of school supplies. Today my petition has over 59,000 signatures [5] and combined with the signatures that the great people over at MomsRising.org [6] were able to collect we have signatures from over 60,000 concerned parents and Disney consumers across the country. Woot Woot!

Now comes the piece that’s a bit outside of my comfort zone. Disney has yet to respond to the campaign so I’m ramping up the pressure and heading to a Disney store in Saugus, Massachusetts this Saturday to deliver the thousands of signatures from fellow parents.

WHEN: Saturday, November 17th, 1pm

WHERE: Disney Store, Square One Mall, 1277 Broadway, Saugus. (Lower level of mall near Macy’s)

There’s also going to be a petition delivery at the Times Square Disney Store location in New York City at noon this Saturday November 17th.

Why is this outside my comfort zone?

I’m the oldest of four children and I tend to be a rule follower. I’m know I’m not breaking any rules, but it feels strange going to a mall for something other than shopping. The plan is to walk into the mall with a box filled with petition signatures-your name is in the box if you signed. Thankfully I have a partner who’s going to help from The Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow [7]. We’re going to hand them off to the Disney store manager to let them know we mean business.

So here I go. Wish me luck. If you want to join me let me know. I have room in my car.

Have a wonderful weekend. Any big plans?
