Disney is Pushing Me Outside of My Comfort Zone

Groovy Green Livin Disney

As most of you know I’ve been working really hard to get Disney to change their ways.

Groovy Green Livin Disney graphicHere’s a quick recap:

Back in August the Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ) published a national report, Hidden Hazards: Toxic Chemicals Inside Children’s Back to School Supplies, which found that seventy-five percent of children’s “back-to-school” supplies tested in a laboratory had elevated levels of toxic phthalates.  A number of the school supplies containing high levels of these chemicals were Disney and Spiderman branded school supplies.

I decided to take matters into my own hands so I started a petition on Change.org calling on Disney to get phthalates and vinyl out of school supplies. Today my petition has over 59,000 signatures and combined with the signatures that the great people over at MomsRising.org were able to collect we have signatures from over 60,000 concerned parents and Disney consumers across the country. Woot Woot!

Now comes the piece that’s a bit outside of my comfort zone. Disney has yet to respond to the campaign so I’m ramping up the pressure and heading to a Disney store in Saugus, Massachusetts this Saturday to deliver the thousands of signatures from fellow parents.

WHEN: Saturday, November 17th, 1pm

WHERE: Disney Store, Square One Mall, 1277 Broadway, Saugus. (Lower level of mall near Macy’s)

There’s also going to be a petition delivery at the Times Square Disney Store location in New York City at noon this Saturday November 17th.

Why is this outside my comfort zone?

I’m the oldest of four children and I tend to be a rule follower. I’m know I’m not breaking any rules, but it feels strange going to a mall for something other than shopping. The plan is to walk into the mall with a box filled with petition signatures-your name is in the box if you signed. Thankfully I have a partner who’s going to help from The Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow. We’re going to hand them off to the Disney store manager to let them know we mean business.

So here I go. Wish me luck. If you want to join me let me know. I have room in my car.

Have a wonderful weekend. Any big plans?

  1. Wishing you luck. And thank you for caring so much about this that you are willing to step out of your comfort zone.

  2. Good for you for doing this. I am reading Slow Death by Rubber Duck right now which really delves into why these chemicals are so harmful to us, especially to children. Disney should take notice. I wonder if you have thought of emailing all the editors of their on-line publications, most of whom are young moms who would absolutely be on board with this initiative? If you contact me privately I can give you some contact information (full disclosure: I’ve been writing a book for the last two years but I used to do a lot of writing for the Walt Disney Internet Group.)

  5. Good luck! I think it’s scandalous that Disney hasn’t responded … it would have been the decent thing to do! :-(

  13. Thanks Stephanie. I’m trying to write a follow-up post right now with all the deets. Overall-Disney wasn’t receptive AT ALL.

  14. Thanks for your support Iris. I’m trying to put together a post with all the details! Stay tuned.

  15. Thanks Micaela!

  16. Thanks so much Francesca. Did you make it to the NYC store on Saturday?

  17. Thanks so much Jennifer. Your support means a lot to me.

  18. So true Anne. I’m trying to put together a follow-up right now.

  19. Thanks Jeannette. Disney really could take the lead on this and make a big impact in the retail community if they wanted to. Keeping kids safe should be at the top of their priority list.

  20. Thanks so much for your support. So appreciated.

  21. Thanks Isabelle.

  22. Thanks so much Marsha.

  23. Lori, Disney will not respond until they’re convinced of consumer demand. You’re leading the charge. My prediction: once they’re pressured (I mean, once they are aware of consumer demand), they’ll make a big PR splash about their steps to err on the side of caution.

  24. Hi Lynn, what do you think it will take for Disney to be convinced of consumer demand? Something more than 65,000 people who are angry and shocked?? You would think that after the study from CHEJ was released showing toxic chemicals in children’s lunch boxes Disney would have moved quickly to rectify the problem-or at least made a comment or two about what their plan was going to be. Maybe I’m just naive.
