Groovy Green Facts and Finds

All Natural Burger

Did you know?

Saltwater (and a lot of it) is sometimes added to meat and poultry products labeled “natural”

A while back I wrote about the misleading labels on hot dogs.  There’s more to be concerned about when it comes to the labeling of processed meats and poultry. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest:

Some unscrupulous meat and poultry producers add as much as 15 percent saltwater to their products—and then have the gall to label such pumped-up products “natural.” The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is calling for public comments regarding such labeling practices.

The “enhanced” poultry adds significant amounts of unneeded sodium to an otherwise healthy food, adding to Americans’ already excessive sodium consumption and gouging consumers with exorbitant prices for salt water. Consumers should not be misled by a false “natural” label claim and they have a right to label information that allows them to make informed, healthful decisions.

Click HERE to send a message to the USDA today, urging an end to this deceptive-labeling practice.

  1. I started organizing all the recipes from my blog on pinterest boards a few days ago. I’m getting a lot of blog traffic from them, too. It’s such a nice way to find things again! I’m following you. Here’s me: http://pinterest.com/SimpLiveLove/

  2. You have to really check the ingredients in almost everything you buy.

  3. So glad you’re on Pinterest! I will make sure to follow you. Nice contribution to Inhabitots! You rock, Lori!

  4. Great Michelle! I will follow you. Good idea to pin all of your blog recipes.

  5. Hi,

I really like eating lentils and split peas crock pot recipes. However, I don’t want to sound gross but these foods don’t fare well on my system. Is there anyway to cook them to cut down on the side effects? :)

  6. Hi Todd. That’s a great question. Do you rinse your lentils and split peas before cooking? You could also try re-introducing the lentils/peas into your diet gradually. I would also suggest talking with a nutritionist or physician to evaluate your diet as a whole. Hope that helps!

  7. I agree Alicia. Label reading has become a part-time job over here!

  8. Thanks Tiffiany! You are very sweet. Glad you are on Pinterest too. I haven’t been on in a while. Hopefully I’ll find some time this week.

  9. Ew, ew, ew. Are you saying that when people add salt to meat while cooking it, they’re doubling up because there’s already a high salt content in there to begin with? That’s so wrong.

  10. That’s the main reason why I don’t eat meat, you never know what you are going to get. The FDA has the looset laws. I just don’t trust them.

    As for Pinterest…OBSESSED!!

  11. Looking forward to your pins Meg!

  12. Depends upon the meat Andrea. If you add salt to your hot dogs-then yes! Any sort of processed meat generally has a lot of added salt. Those products are sometimes labeled ‘natural’ which really is so wrong.

  13. [...] I’ve jumped in head first. Have you? Pinterest is my new hobby aka time suck. I’m spending A LOT of time finding really cool things and in the process discovering great sites that I might not otherwise come across. I have so many ideas for boards that my head is spinning. Today I created a board for Eco Valentines Crafts with Kids.  Let me know if you have any good craft projects to add to the board (or any of the boards). [...]
